📉 The Vanishing Entry-Level Job: Is AI Gutting the Next Generation of Talent?
We’re not just automating tasks — we’re erasing opportunities for the next generation to grow.
“AI is gutting the next generation of talent.”
That’s the headline from a recent Fortune article — and honestly, it stopped me in my tracks.
We’ve spent the last year talking about how AI will change jobs, but we haven’t talked nearly enough about the jobs that might never exist again — the entry-level roles, internships, and first opportunities where people actually learn.
These aren’t just jobs — they’re launchpads. They’re where people make mistakes, get mentored, and figure out who they are. Replacing junior marketers, writers, and analysts with AI might make short-term business sense, but what happens when there’s no pipeline of skilled humans left?
As an educator, I see students every day who are curious, creative, and hungry to grow. But what are we preparing them for if the first rung of the ladder is gone?
We need a new approach — one that doesn’t just teach AI skills, but rebuilds the pathway for human potential in an AI-powered world.
What if schools, companies, and communities came together to create:
AI-assisted internships that augment learning, not replace it?
Mentorship programs that prioritize human guidance alongside AI tools?
Job simulations that build real-world skills in safe, educational settings?
The question isn’t just what jobs will exist in 10 years.
It’s: Who will be ready to do them if no one gets to start?
